Pine Ridge Girls School (Anpo Wicahpi)
Since 2015, Pine Ridge Girls School (Anpo Wicahpi) has journeyed with the mission to radically change Lakota girls’ trajectory by equipping them with foundations for promising futures with choice, community service, and opportunity. We emphasize cultural knowledge and holistic education in which students learn food sovereignty means planting, harvesting, and preparing traditional foods. This fosters responsibility, resilience, and respect for the land. Incorporating food sovereignty into our school’s curriculum helps students develop skills in gardening, traditional cooking, and sustainable, food practicing; ensuring future generations understand the importance of self-sufficiency. Our girls have become change-makers for food sovereignty and water protection who share their knowledge with nearby schools. They are the lead school for the World Wildlife Federation’s Zero Food Waste in Schools Indigenous Initiative.
